Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) Neurotransmitter Analysis

This test measures levels of brain chemicals such as serotonin, dopamine, and GABA in cerebrospinal fluid collected during a lumbar puncture.

Why it matters: Abnormal levels may be linked to movement disorders, autism, or rare neurotransmitter deficiencies.

In children: It helps explain unexplained developmental regression or severe movement problems.

Statistic: Research shows that neurotransmitter deficiencies account for about 5% of unexplained neurological conditions in children (NIH, 2023).

What families should know: It’s performed only in specialized centers and requires expert interpretation.
